The Hadley Small is one of our most popular bags - hold it and you'll understand why. Not only is it a stylish messenger bag, it is an excellent camera bag - the perfect mix of style and function.
Take for example the 'Quick Release System' coupled with solid brass buckles. Why have we added both? Because the QRS allows you to open and close the bag quickly and silently with one hand and the buckles allow you to adjust the ‘fit’ of the front pockets. For example, if you have squeezed some bulky gear into one of the front pockets, you can just let out that side’s buckle to suit so that you can still comfortably close the bag with the QRS. You won't need to use the buckle for opening the bag.
The bag also offers exceptional protection. The outside of the bag is made with stormproof 'Stormblock' material - two layers of fabric bonded together with a layer of butyl rubber. Stormblock fabric never needs 're-proofing'. Further the bag features a sculpted top flap to stop weather getting in. To provide impact protection the bag features a removable padded insert (attached inside by a single press stud) - take the insert out to transform the Hadley Small into an understated, stylish travel or work bag. Inside the insert are two removable, repositionable padded vertical dividers that run the height of the bag and two smaller flappy dividers for stacking lenses. The top of the insert features a padded flap as a further defense against any rain getting in and to provide protection in a fall.
The Hadley Small is a compact bag yet has a larger capacity than you might think. You can tell from the dimensions that it will fit 2 rangefinder or small mirrorless cameras but its flexible body also allows it to flex out to easily fit a mid-sized DSLR and 2-3 small to mid-sized lenses. The bag's two front pockets are fitted with a secondary stud in their top outer corner - open this stud to create extra space or close it to form a handy pen holder.
Of course all this, coupled with the fact that the Hadley Small doesn't 'look' like a camera bag makes it perfect for carrying your gear discretely round the country or the city. Like all our camera bags the Hadley Small is made in England and backed by our 5 year manufacturer's guarantee.

Therefore it can fit items slightly larger than the dimensions suggest - inside it could comfortably bow out to a 'D' measurement of 100mm at the bottom and 120mm at the top (at the centre) for example, at a stretch it can go out to 140mm (5½").

Can this bag fit a Canon 5D, 6D, 7D or a Nikon D850 with lens attached?
Yes it can so long as the lens isn't too bag - most people would put it in with the lens facing down. Next to the camera you'll even fit a second lens.
It will push the front of the bag out a little but this won't cause a problem (the bag was designed to be able to do this). You won't be able to use a battery grip.
Can this bag fit a Leica M camera?
Yes it can, indeed you should fit 2 of them (with lenses attached) with ease.
Can this bag fit a 9.7, 10.2 or 10.5 inch iPad?
Yes - you can fit it in the back of the bag between the padded insert and the outside of the bag. Of course in this position it won't be padded - however no one has reported damage to their device from placing it here.
If you want you could put the iPad in a small, slim case (a big case, even the one made by us, won't fit).
Also bear in mind that it may push slightly at the edges of the bag - so choosing a FibreNyte version of the bag would be sensible to reduce the risk of wear.
Do the buckles make the bag slow to get into?
No! Hadley front straps are opened by sliding the top of the strap off the brass clogball (round stud). This is a very quick way to open and close the bag - many people learn to do this one-handed as the leather softens.
The buckle is only used very occasionally to adjust the fit of the bag. We'd recommend keeping the strap in the buckle during normal use - this keeps the straps securely attached to the bag.
You can keep the bag itself open while shooting - just don't put the straps back on the clogball until you want to close bag.
Does this bag need re-proofing to keep it waterproof?
No. The fabric is made of 3 layers - the middle layer is butyl rubber. Water cannot pass through this butyl rubber layer. As long as you don't get a hole in the fabric or expose it to harsh chemicals (for example in a washing machine) the fabric should remain waterproof for many years. There is no need to apply re-proofing.
What is the difference between 'Canvas' and 'FibreNyte'?
In simple terms ‘Canvas’ or ‘FibreNyte’ refers to top layer of fabric on our bags – the facecloth.
‘Canvas’ is a mix of cotton and polyester. ‘FibreNyte’ refers to our face fabric that is completely synthetic. Canvas is hard wearing, FibreNyte is very hard wearing.
Both fabrics are bonded to a non-wicking polyester backing fabric with a middle layer butyl rubber – this rubber layer makes both fabrics equally (and very) waterproof. Water can’t get through that rubber layer.
Both fabrics have a similar weave - the FibreNyte looks similar to canvas. Canvas is slightly softer to the touch, FibreNyte is slightly rougher to the touch.
People tend to choose Canvas if they want the bag to age gracefully and look vintage over time. This is particularly true of people who chose our ‘Khaki Canvas’ fabric as this looks particularly lovely as it ages.
People tend to choose FibreNyte if they want the bag to look newer for longer or if they are particularly hard on their gear - for example by carrying the bag to work with them every day, doing a lot of hiking or filling it particularly full. If you are buying a black bag it’s particularly worth considering FibreNyte as it will stay looking blacker longer. Also Sage FibreNyte is particularly attractive as a colour – it’s probably the most popular colour among our staff!
Do I need a shoulder pad for this bag?
The shoulder pad isn't essential but can stop the strap from digging into your shoulder if you carrying heavy equipment inside the bag or carrying it for long periods. It can also reduce the chances of the bag slipping off your shoulder if you don't wear it across the body. Remember only the 'SP15' and 'SP40' sizes fit this bag. Buying it with the bag will save the postage cost of buying it separately later.
Can I get the handle at the top added to make it like a Hadley Small Pro?
Unfortunately we are unable to offer this service. The Hadley Small Pro is constructed quite differently to allow for the handle - for example the top flap has been designed to distribute the weight properly when held by the handle and sewn underneath that flap is another layer of fabric to hide the fibreglass reinforcing bar that the handle connects to.
