The original Hadley Pro was designed in response to customers who wanted even more flexibility when it came to how they used their Billingham. A carry handle was at the top of our list, together with extra storage capability, creating a camera bag that could double up as a work bag. The design, along with the rest of the Hadley range, proved to be a resounding success.

So, we reasoned, a larger Hadley Pro would be a useful addition to the range and set about re-thinking the Hadley Pro concept from first principles. As you would expect, we gave a lot of consideration to what equipment the bag might be expected to carry and how it could best be protected - the additional weight the bag would need to carry producing some fundamental changes to the design.

The result is a multi-purpose bag, a bit bigger than a Hadley Large, with many of the features of the smaller Hadley Pro. We have added considerable additional space to the interior, increasing the depth to provide room for more, and larger, kit without sacrificing the slim appearance that characterises the Hadley design.

There is more than enough space to carry a large DSLR camera and lenses in the padded bucket insert in which we increased the thickness of the impact absorbing foam over the standard Pro model to cater for additional and/or bigger equipment. We also added a thin, full width open pocket that sits just behind the bucket insert. This will accommodate a 15” laptop. The insert includes two vertical padded dividers (secured with Velcro®) that are used to separate and protect your gear. The angled centre panels of these vertical dividers creates a central 'cone' space when two dividers are placed facing each other - perfect for a snug fit for camera and lens.

If more space is needed the Hadley Large Pro is compatible with our AVEA pockets. They fasten to the bag using re-designed side patches, which are larger and allow for more hand room when fitting the pockets, yet still provide a snug attachment. The insert and camera gear can also be removed as one, giving you a voluminous work bag or briefcase. Or even a small weekend bag. Simply undo the two press studs, take out the insert and you’re ready to go.

We have made significant changes to the outside of the bag as well. You can carry the bag either by grab handle made from thick top grain leather or over the shoulder with the extra wide webbing shoulder strap sewn for strength into thick leather side panels. The bag is held shut with strong leather straps that combine with the solid brass buckle fixings to keep the bag firmly closed against the elements.

Beneath the top flap are two large front ‘dump’ pockets that can be expanded when required by releasing two press stud fixings, to take more gear. A large zipped pocket with rain flap to the rear of the bag will accommodate A4 size documents, among other things. The back of the bag also has a full width leather reinforcement panel to provide additional support and help the bag maintain its contours.

Of course the outside of the bag is made with our 'Stormblock' material - canvas or Fibrenyte fabric bonded to butyl rubber for exceptional and long lasting weather resistance. This together with the fact that the bag is made in England and covered by our 5 year manufacturers guarantee make this bag an excellent choice for the demanding photographer who needs ample space on the go.

Does this bag need re-proofing to keep it waterproof?
No. The fabric is made of 3 layers - the middle layer is butyl rubber. Water cannopass through this butyl rubber layer. As long as you don't get a hole in the fabric or expose it to harsh chemicals (for example in a washing machine) the fabric should remain waterproof for many years. There is no need to apply re-proofing.

What is the difference between 'Canvas' and 'FibreNyte'?
In simple terms ‘Canvas’ or ‘FibreNyte’ refers to top layer of fabric on our bags – the facecloth.

‘Canvas’ is a mix of cotton and polyester. ‘FibreNyte’ refers to our face fabric that is completely synthetic. Canvas is hard wearing, FibreNyte is very hard wearing.

Both fabrics are bonded to a non-wicking polyester backing fabric with a middle layer butyl rubber – this rubber layer makes both fabrics equally (and very) waterproof. Water can’t get through that rubber layer.

Both fabrics have a similar weave - the FibreNyte looks similar to canvas. Canvas is slightly softer to the touch, FibreNyte is slightly rougher to the touch.

People tend to choose Canvas if they want the bag to age gracefully and look vintage over time. This is particularly true of people who chose our ‘Khaki Canvas’ fabric as this looks particularly lovely as it ages.

People tend to choose FibreNyte if they want the bag to look newer for longer or if they are particularly hard on their gear - for example by carrying the bag to work with them every day, doing a lot of hiking or filling it particularly full. If you are buying a black bag it’s particularly worth considering FibreNyte as it will stay looking blacker longer. Also Sage FibreNyte is particularly attractive as a colour – it’s probably the most popular colour among our staff!

Is this bag bigger than the 'Hadley Large' bag?
Yes this bag is quite a bit bigger than the Hadley Large bag - the extra few centimeters on all the dimensions make it a significant step up in size.

Why did you use buckles on the front instead of the Quick Release System/Clogballs?
If you fill this bag with a lot of equipment it can make the bag too heavy to rely on clogballs. The buckles are there so that you can carry more weight in the bag if you wish.

Does this fit cabin baggage dimensions?
Yes it fits cabin baggage dimensions for almost every airline. In fact many of our customers use this bag for travelling as it has enough space to carry the essentials for a day or two's travel yet its slim enough to carry around (although it is less slim than the Hadley Pro, Hadley Small and Hadley Large).

The removable dividers let you split the bag into three columns. It would be easy to carry a camera with a lens attached in one column and then a change of clothes in the remaining space.

Do I need to undo the top handle to get into the bag?
No the top handle doesn't need to be opened to get into the bag. You only need to undo the buckles to get into the bag.

Can this fit a Canon 5D with battery grip and lens attached?
Yes you should fit that in fairly easy so long as the lens is less than about 22cm. It will only push the sides of the bag out a small amount.
