The main compartment of the bag features dense foam padding all-round. This is up to 2.5cm (1") thick in places to protect your equipment from bumps, knocks and general movement.
Additionally, inside the main compartment are removable, repositionable padded foam dividers (2x long dividers and 2x short dividers) to create places to store spare lenses, light meters etc.
An internal pocket provides space to put notebooks or passports or even an iPad with up to 10.5" screen size.
If carrying an iPad you may want to add a slim case to protect it from coming into contact with your camera equipment.
The rain cover has an adjustable drawstring pull that helps to stop rain or snow getting into the main compartment. The large front pocket is also protected by a separate fabric and leather trim.
Both pockets open with a double zipper for easy access.
Ergonomically designed shoulder straps made with a central backing of padded spacer fabric promote breathability and make it easier to carry the bag for long periods.
A hook is stitched onto the back to allow the bag to be hung up should you not want it sitting on the floor.
The bag has brass feet mounted to strong leather corner patches on the bottom. Together these help prevent wear to the main body of the bag and extend its longevity.
Add any of our AVEA End Pockets to the strong leather side patches (one each side) for extra storage and organization whilst out and about.

Will this bag fit a laptop?
No. This bag doesn't fit a laptop.
Will this bag fit an iPad?
The main flap to open the bag has a pocket on the back - a 9.7", 10.2" or 10.5" iPad will fit in this pocket.
Please note - this pocket is unpadded. Additionally a hard object (like a tablet) might bump against the camera equipment in the main compartment through the thin fabric of the pocket - so a slim case (it would need to be very slim) would be good idea if using the bag this way.
To avoid confusion - there is no way a 12.9" inch iPad will fit.
Does this bag need re-proofing to keep it waterproof?
No. The fabric is made of 3 layers - the middle layer is butyl rubber. Water cannot pass through this butyl rubber layer. As long as you don't get a hole in the fabric or expose it to harsh chemicals (for example in a washing machine) the fabric should remain waterproof for many years. There is no need to apply re-proofing.
What is the difference between 'Canvas' and 'FibreNyte'?
In simple terms ‘Canvas’ or ‘FibreNyte’ refers to top layer of fabric on our bags – the facecloth.
‘Canvas’ is a mix of cotton and polyester. ‘FibreNyte’ refers to our face fabric that is completely synthetic. Canvas is hard wearing, FibreNyte is very hard wearing.
Both fabrics are bonded to a non-wicking polyester backing fabric with a middle layer butyl rubber – this rubber layer makes both fabrics equally (and very) waterproof. Water can’t get through that rubber layer.
Both fabrics have a similar weave - the FibreNyte looks similar to canvas. Canvas is slightly softer to the touch, FibreNyte is slightly rougher to the touch.
People tend to choose Canvas if they want the bag to age gracefully and look vintage over time. This is particularly true of people who choose our ‘Khaki Canvas’ fabric as this looks particularly lovely as it ages.
People tend to choose FibreNyte if they want the bag to look newer for longer or if they are particularly hard on their gear - for example by carrying the bag to work with them every day, doing a lot of hiking or filling it particularly full. If you are buying a black bag it’s particularly worth considering FibreNyte as it will stay looking blacker longer. Also Sage FibreNyte is particularly attractive as a colour – it’s probably the most popular colour among our staff!
Is there any significance to the '25' name?
The bag was originally made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of Billingham. We then stopped making it because the staff who were good at making it retired. In 2016 we started making the bag again - it took us months to get the redesign right and get everyone trained up to make it! '25' doesn't bear any relation to the size or capacity of the bag.
What is the green/black/brown cowling around the main zip for?
The green fabric round the opening to the main compartment is to stop water getting in the zip if it rains heavily. It helps keep your equipment dry.
Can this bag fit a tripod?
Yes - but it is awkward:
If a tripod is important for you then this might not be the best bag for you.
Which end pockets fit on this bag? How do they attach?
AVEA 3, AVEA 5, AVEA 7 and AVEA 8 End Pockets fit on this bag - other sizes do not fit.
On the back of the AVEAs are two leather straps - they thread down through the leather side panels of the 25 Rucksack. For extra security metal pop-clips then clip to hold the leather straps in place at the bottom.
What does the bag look like with AVEA 7 End Pockets attached?
We have included photos below of how the pockets look on the bag. Remember, the AVEA 3, AVEA 5 and AVEA 8 sizes also fit. The End Pockets are not included with the bag.
