The ‘Mini Eventer’ was created following feedback from customers that whilst many loved the look and functionality of the existing ‘Eventer’, they found it was simply too big for their needs. Sized between two of our best-selling bags, the ‘Hadley Small Pro’ and ‘Hadley Pro 2020’, the Mini Eventer is designed to meet the needs of those who want the ultimate style and protection for their gear in a more portable size.

Like the existing Eventer, its styling is dominated by its base that covers the lower third of the bag in the same top-grain leather that we use to make all of our bags. Carefully selected and worked to the desired shape, these large pieces of leather give the bag structure and also help to form the two deep front dump pockets.

The bag also features a 2” wide shoulder sling, to match its older sibling, made from shuttle woven polyester. This sling is adjustable in length and includes a padded leather SP50 Shoulder Pad for added comfort when carrying on your shoulder.

When designing the ‘Mini Eventer’ we took the opportunity to add some popular features. These features include a luggage trolley retainer strap - useful when travelling through airports etc., an improved top handle with leather underneath and weatherproof zips on the rear pocket and dual-zipped main compartment.

The main compartment is also protected by the main flap, made of our 3-layer waterproof materials. Both our 3-layer Canvas and 3-layer FibreNyte materials have a layer of butyl rubber in the middle that prevents the fabric from ever needing to be reproofed. Together, the fabric and zips make this bag exceptionally weatherproof.

This aforementioned main flap is opened with our ‘Quick Release System’, simply slide the top of the leather straps off the brass ‘Clogballs’ to gain access. As the leather softens and with practice, you should soon be able to open the bag one-handed. The buckles aren’t needed to gain access to the bag, they need be used only to occasionally fine-tune the tension between the main flap and front pockets (depending on what you are carrying in those pockets).

The ‘Mini Eventer’ has a specially designed padded insert. Inside you can safely store and protect a small-to-medium sized DSLR such as the Canon 5D MkIV (without a battery grip), a mirrorless camera such as Fujifilm X-T4, Sony a9ii, Canon R5, Nikon Z-7ii or rangefinder camera such as the Leica M10 - each with 2-3 small-to-medium sized lenses. In the back of the removable insert is a padded area for an 11inch iPad (or similar smaller device). Alternatively, remove the insert to turn the bag into a casual bag within seconds.

All Billingham bags are made at our factory in England and are covered by our 5 year manufacturers guarantee.

So while this review shows the tablet in the rear pocket it isn't necessary to carry it this way).

What are the main differences between this and the Eventer?
This bag is smaller and lighter than the Eventer. Additionally:

  • The padded laptop slip (for 13inch MacBooks) in the back of the Eventer is replaced by a padded tablet slip (for 11inch iPads) in the back of the Mini Eventer.
  • The Mini Eventer features a luggage trolley retainer strap on the back which the Eventer does not.
  • The Mini Eventer features weatherproof zips. The Eventer features conventional zips.
  • The Mini Eventer features an improved top handle with leather on the underside for increased comfort. The Eventer does not have leather under the handle. Both bags feature fibreglass reinforcement to the handle to reduce stress on the bag when the handle is used.

What are the main differences between this and the Hadley Small Pro?
This bag is a little bigger than the Hadley Small Pro. Additionally:

  • The main compartment of the Mini Eventer closes with a zip and a main flap. The main compartment on the Hadley Small Pro closes with only a main flap. Some users might prefer the Hadley Small Pro as it is slightly quicker to get items in and out of. Other users may prefer the Mini Eventer because they like the idea of zip closure.
  • The Hadley Small Pro has a removable shoulder sling. The shoulder sling on the Mini Eventer is non-removable.
  • The Hadley Small Pro is slightly more flexible - it will mould to your body a little more and the front of the bag will bow out more to fit larger gear if needed. The Mini Eventer is slightly deeper front-to-back but has less ability to bow out further than that's stated internal size.
  • The Hadley Small Pro does NOT have a dedicated padded area for an iPad or tablet - in that bag to store such a device you have to put it between the back of the padded camera insert and the back of the bag (so it is only padded on ne side). The Mini Eventer has a dedicated padded tablet area for better protection of those devices.
  • Both bags have the newer top handle with leather underneath, weatherproof zips (although the Hadley Small Pro does not have a zip on its main compartment) and a luggage trolley retainer strap on the back.

What are the main differences between this and the Hadley Pro 2020?
This bag is a little smaller than the Hadley Pro 2020. Additionally:

Some users might prefer the Hadley Pro 2020 as it is slightly quicker to get items in and out of. Other users may prefer the Mini Eventer because they like the idea of zip closure.
  • The Hadley Pro 2020 has a removable shoulder sling. The shoulder sling on the Mini Eventer is non-removable.
  • The Hadley Pro 2020 is slightly more flexible - it will mould to your body a little more and the front of the bag will bow out more to fit larger gear if needed. The Mini Eventer is slightly deeper front-to-back but has less ability to bow out further than that's stated internal size.
  • The Hadley Pro 2020 does NOT have a dedicated padded area for an iPad or tablet - in that bag to store such a device you have to put it between the back of the padded camera insert and the back of the bag (so it is only padded on ne side). The Mini Eventer has a dedicated padded tablet area for better protection of those devices.
  • Both bags have the newer top handle with leather underneath, weatherproof zips (although the Hadley Pro 2020 does not have a zip on its main compartment) and a luggage trolley retainer strap on the back.

Can this bag fit a 9.7, 10.2 or 10.5inch iPad?
Yes these devices would fit in the padded tablet compartment instead of an 11inch iPad very easily.

Can this bag fit a 13inch MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?
No. There isn't even a way to squeeze one in. If you want to fit a 13" MacBook we would recommend the Eventer or the Hadley One both of which have dedicated padded 13" laptop compartments.

Do the buckles make the bag slow to get into?
No! The front straps are opened by sliding the top of the strap off the brass clogball (round stud). This is a very quick way to open and close the bag - many people learn to do this one-handed as the leather softens.

The buckle is only used very occasionally to adjust the fit of the bag. We'd recommend keeping the strap in the buckle during normal use - this keeps the straps securely attached to the bag.

You can keep the bag itself open while shooting - just don't put the straps back on the clogball until you want to close bag. The zips can also be tucked behind the walls of the padded insert when the bag is in use.

Can the zips be tucked out of way when I'm using the bag so I can get items in and out more quickly?
Yes. The zips can also be tucked behind the front and back walls of the padded insert when the bag is in use if you expect to take the camera gear in and out of the bag frequently without closing the bag.

Does this bag need re-proofing to keep it waterproof?
No. The fabric is made of 3 layers - the middle layer is butyl rubber. Water cannot pass through this butyl rubber layer. As long as you don't get a hole in the fabric or expose it to harsh chemicals (for example in a washing machine) the fabric should remain waterproof for many years. There is no need to apply re-proofing.

What is the difference between 'Canvas' and 'FibreNyte'?
In simple terms ‘Canvas’ or ‘FibreNyte’ refers to top layer of fabric on our bags – the facecloth.

‘Canvas’ is a mix of cotton and polyester. ‘FibreNyte’ refers to our face fabric that is completely synthetic. Canvas is hard wearing, FibreNyte is very hard wearing.

Both fabrics are bonded to a non-wicking polyester backing fabric with a middle layer butyl rubber – this rubber layer makes both fabrics equally (and very) waterproof. Water can’t get through that rubber layer.

Both fabrics have a similar weave - the FibreNyte looks similar to canvas. Canvas is slightly softer to the touch, FibreNyte is slightly rougher to the touch.

People tend to choose Canvas if they want the bag to age gracefully and look vintage over time. This is particularly true of people who choose our ‘Khaki Canvas’ fabric as this looks particularly lovely as it ages.

People tend to choose FibreNyte if they want the bag to look newer for longer or if they are particularly hard on their gear - for example by carrying the bag to work with them every day, doing a lot of hiking or filling it particularly full. If you are buying a black bag it’s particularly worth considering FibreNyte as it will stay looking blacker longer. Also Sage FibreNyte is particularly attractive as a colour – it’s probably the most popular colour among our staff!

Which shoulder pad fits this bag?
The SP50 shoulder pad fits this bag - it is already included in the price so you only need to buy it if you have lost or damaged yours. The SP20 shoulder pad can also fit if needed but isn't included.

Does this bag have a removable padded insert?
Yes this bag comes with a removable padded insert included in the price. You can take the padded insert out if not carrying cameras - this turns the bag into a great casual bag.

How does the removable padded insert attach inside of the bag?
It attaches with pop-clips on the front and back of the insert. These match up to clips on the front and back inside walls of the main compartment of the bag.

Can end pockets be attached to this bag?
No. End pockets can not be attached to this bag.
