Unmistakably Billingham the 555 features classic, well thought-through design and handcrafted quality. The same design as the other 5-Series bags the 555 is certainly king in terms of size with space for 2 or 3 DSLRs and several lenses making in perfect for those who need to carry a lot of gear. Its front zip pocket even has space for a 15" inch laptop to be stored in a padded slipcase like our 15" Laptop Slip (not included).
The 555's no-nonsense design is popular with busy photographers who like the fact that they can get to all their gear quickly and safely thanks to our TukTop feature. This allows the two sides of the zipped opening to be tucked behind the bag's internal front and rear dividers.
You’ll find nine good-sized main pockets in all two at the front under the flap , two in the inside zipped front compartment , four internal slip pockets in the main compartment and a zippered rear pocket .
When you look in detail at the 555, you’ll notice the way the Quick Release System has been adapted so that the top grain leather straps pass through solid brass ‘D’ rings at the end of the webbing carry-handles. We’ve done it this way to provide fast, secure closure even when the bag is heavily loaded. An embossed leather grab handle holds the hand straps together and makes them comfortable to hold.
Behind the main flap you will find the secondary flap which protects the two full-depth front pockets. By their side is a handy pen pocket and behind them there is the full width double zipped pocket (with space for laptop in slim case) and of course, the main zipped compartment with the TukTop feature. At the back, a full-width zipped pocket is ideal for manuals or documents.
Thanks to a third, internal web carry handle , moving a 5 Series around safely – even with the main flap open - is no problem.
The 555 features an adjustable ‘Y’ shaped Delta sling, designed to help prevent rocking, even when the bag is full. For times when you need extra space, optional Delta Pockets can be fitted to the base of the sling. If you like to carry your bag on your back we’ve fitted 5 point mounting loops for the optional Back Pack Harness (not currently available) – they can also be used with our tripod straps.
Finally, to protect the underside, brass feet are fitted to top grain leather corner patches, while internally the bottom of the bag features a padded, waterproofed base.
Of course the 555 is made in England and is protected by our 5 year manufacturers guarantee.

Does this bag need re-proofing to keep it waterproof?
No. The fabric is made of 3 layers - the middle layer is butyl rubber. Water cannot pass through this butyl rubber layer. As long as you don't get a hole in the fabric or expose it to harsh chemicals (for example in a washing machine) the fabric should remain waterproof for many years. There is no need to apply re-proofing.
What is the difference between 'Canvas' and 'FibreNyte'?
In simple terms ‘Canvas’ or ‘FibreNyte’ refers to top layer of fabric on our bags – the facecloth.
‘Canvas’ is a mix of cotton and polyester. ‘FibreNyte’ refers to our face fabric that is completely synthetic. Canvas is hard wearing, FibreNyte is very hard wearing.
Both fabrics are bonded to a non-wicking polyester backing fabric with a middle layer butyl rubber – this rubber layer makes both fabrics equally (and very) waterproof. Water can’t get through that rubber layer.
Both fabrics have a similar weave - the FibreNyte looks similar to canvas. Canvas is slightly softer to the touch, FibreNyte is slightly rougher to the touch.
People tend to choose Canvas if they want the bag to age gracefully and look vintage over time. This is particularly true of people who chose our ‘Khaki Canvas’ fabric as this looks particularly lovely as it ages.
People tend to choose FibreNyte if they want the bag to look newer for longer or if they are particularly hard on their gear - for example by carrying the bag to work with them every day, doing a lot of hiking or filling it particularly full. If you are buying a black bag it’s particularly worth considering FibreNyte as it will stay looking blacker longer. Also Sage FibreNyte is particularly attractive as a colour – it’s probably the most popular colour among our staff!
